Bran Wode’s novels are set in a modern world that includes magic, ghosts, faeries, queers and allies, secret societies, and above all else, love.

Bran has written eight queer urban-romantic fantasy novels. Magus Maximus, the first to be published, was released in January 2023; a second, Breathe… always, was released that May.

Bran lives in the Puget Sound area of Washington State on America’s Left Coast and teaches the craft and art of writing at annual writing retreats on the Sound.

Jaydee Saliba, a third-year Art student and a Life Studies model, finds her room haunted by a former occupant, Ashley Bookbinder, a gay student from the reign of Queen Victoria. Angry that the ghost can’t leave her room and discovering that a Teaching Assistant in a required class won’t teach women, she accidentally sends one wing of the men’s dormitory, including the hated TA’s room and her best friend’s boyfriend, into another dimension.

Nowhere in the known history of The Path is there any record of such powerful magic. The ancient headmaster cannot believe the unremarkable Jaydee could have caused the disaster and won’t accept her help to bring the dorm and the men inside back from the Otherworld.

Can Jaydee learn to trust her own hidden power enough to follow where it leads her?

When Evergreen Stem School senior Fina Stefani, an award-winning jazz mezzo-soprano, meets a new senior on the first day of class, her world gets knocked askew. There’s something about green-eyed Tilley Jameson, the red-headed lesbian goth with a pitch-perfect alto voice, that Fina’s boyfriend, Trevor Labowski, hates.

Once Fina discovers the Jameson family is a safe harbor from her stormy alcoholic mother she spends more and more time with them. Trevor threatens to expose her new friend’s family’s magical powers. Fina must choose between her boyfriend and her new friend before an angry mob of witch hunters destroys the Jamesons and the other magicians in Seattle.

Will her loyalties — and love — cause her to choose Tilley and dump Trevor, or vice-versa?

Bran’s current work in progress:

Mick McDonough’s life turned upside-down 3 days before her 20th birthday. An auto accident caused by a drunk driver has left her in the hospital with a crushed pelvis, shattered legs, and a damaged spine. A concussion has left her memory fuzzy. She barely remembers being abandoned by her friends at a drive-in and a man her age named Mike, who could be her mirror-clone, offering her a ride home. No one has visited her in the hospital except for the medical staff, and she’s lonely and isolated.

Lorelei Dowling is still reeling from the death of her best friend 3 weeks earlier when she delivers dinner to a new patient, the last one on her commissary route. The young woman seems vaguely familiar, but neither of them knows why. Mick’s first attempt to sit up and eat results in a scream of pain, triggering the charge nurse to accuse Lorelei of interfering with patient care. After Mick uses magic to defend Lorelei, the two young women form an intimate bond.

Is Mike a long-lost brother, and if he is, how can that be when Mick has no siblings? Will the mystery break Mick’s family further apart or bring it closer together?

And, can Mick and Lorelei’s growing attraction to each other withstand the pressures of daily life with a severe handicap, the impossible odds of multiple near-death experiences, grief, years of neglect, the threat of homelessness, and the mirror-clone mystery of Mike?

Mick & Lorelei belong to the same magical world as Tilley & Fina from Breathe… always, and Jaydee & Ash from Magus Maximus.
